Admissions Testing

Admissions testing is available for children who are required to take an individually administered test as part of the application process at many independent schools in Northern VA and the Washington D.C. area.

PROCEDURE:

procedureTo ensure optimal performance, children should be tested in the A.M.

Children under the age of 6 will take the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Third Edition (WPPSI-IV). Testing time typically runs 45-60 minutes.
The fee is $360.

Children ages 6 and above take the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Testing time typically runs 60-90 minutes. The fee is $380.

To schedule an appointment, please call 703-618-0900

After you have scheduled an appointment with us, you can print out the Admissions Testing Form found under our Forms tab and bring it to the appointment with payment.

Your child will be asked to participate in a series of activities that assess their cognitive and language development as well as visual perceptual/visual-motor abilities.

No practice or preparation is necessary!

When discussing this appointment with your child, it is best to tell them that they will be coming to the office to do “activities”, such as putting blocks together and looking at pictures. We encourage you to refer to psychologist testing your child by their first name so that your child feels relaxed about the meeting.

I.Q. tests are not valid if your child has taken it within the last year, but the results of previous testing are usually accepted by the schools.

If your child wears glasses in school, please have him/her wear them for testing. Medication should be taken just as on a regular school day.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

If the assessment is cancelled 48 hours or more in advance of the scheduled date, a $50 fee will be charged. If your child is sick, please call us immediately and we will reschedule the evaluation. Rest assured that we will accommodate you as soon as your child is well.

If your child is under 6 years old, we prefer that you stay in the waiting room while your child is being tested.

A written report will be e-mailed to you within approximately 2 weeks of testing. If you are in need of the report more quickly, please let us know at the time of your appointment.

CONSULTATION:

The reports are detailed and will answer many of your questions; however, we are available to meet with you if you would like further explanation. There is an additional fee of $75 for a 30-minute consultation. We will also send the report to any schools you indicate on the form provided free of charge. We are pleased to be working with you and look forward to meeting you and your child.

If you have questions about your appointment or need to reschedule, please call us at 703-618-0900 or contact Dr. Katie Hennessy, the Director of the practice at ktpsych@me.com.

  • What is Cbt?

CBT promotes independence by teaching coping skills, problem solving, and self-help in therapy.

CBT is designed to be a relatively brief form of treatment. Many problems can be treated in 10-24 sessions, although longer treatment is sometimes necessary.
